The meta tags that matter most

Small snippets of code in your page that decide how you look in Google and on social media.

🏷️

Title tag

Ideal: 30 to 60 characters

The clickable headline in search results. Put your main keyword near the start and keep it unique on every page.

📝

Meta description

Ideal: 70 to 160 characters

The short summary under your title. It does not directly boost rankings, but a good one earns more clicks.

🔗

Canonical tag

One preferred address

Tells Google which version of a page is the main one, so duplicates do not split your ranking power.

📱

Viewport tag

width=device-width

Makes your page fit phone screens. Google ranks the mobile version of your site first.

💬

Open Graph tags

Title, description, image

Control the preview card when your link is shared on Facebook, LinkedIn and many chat apps.

🤖

Robots tag

index, follow

Tells search engines whether to show a page in results. One stray “noindex” can hide a page completely.

Good to know

Meta tag questions, answered

Plain-English answers about titles, descriptions and previews.

What is a meta tag?

A meta tag is a small piece of HTML code in the head of a web page. It gives search engines and social networks information about the page, such as its title, description and preview image.

How long should a title tag and meta description be?

Keep titles to about 30 to 60 characters (roughly 600 pixels wide) and descriptions to about 70 to 160 characters. Longer text is usually cut off with three dots in Google results.

Do meta keywords still help SEO?

No. Google has ignored the meta keywords tag for many years. You can remove it and focus on a strong title, description and quality content.

Why does my meta description look different in Google?

Google sometimes rewrites descriptions to better match what the person searched for. A clear, relevant description that matches the page content is the most likely to be used.

What are Open Graph tags?

Open Graph tags (og:title, og:description, og:image) control how your link looks when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn and many messaging apps. Without them the preview can look plain or pick the wrong image.

Can I check any website with this tool?

You can check any public web page. Pages behind a login, private networks and sites that block automated visitors cannot be analyzed.
